Seizure sends driver, passengers up utility pole

A medical emergency is to blame for a Sunday afternoon crash in Erwin, according to police.

Twenty-five-year-old Dakota Lee Hodge was driving southwest on Old Post Road with three passengers around 2:40 p.m., when he had a seizure and passed out, according to a wreck report. The car then left the roadway and traveled up a utility pole on Moulton Spring Road. The car became entangled in power lines and came to rest on its rear bumper.

Police believe the car ended up in such an unusual position because it initially struck a guy wire, slid up the wire and hit the utility pole.

Passengers told police they had to awaken the driver, who apparently was unconscious during the crash.

No injuries were reported and the crash remains under investigation by the Erwin Police Department.
