FOUR OAKS — South Johnston celebrated four seniors during a varsity basketball doubleheader against in-county foe West Johnston at home Wednesday.
The South boys maintained a wire-to-wire, 60-52 victory over West, surpassing the .500 mark in Quad County 3A Conference play for the year.
Trojans (4-9, 3-2 QCC) upperclassmen Ricardo Perez, Jaydn McNeill and Brayden Barefoot combined for 18 points on Senior Night.
Meanwhile, juniors Chase Norris (team-high 16 points) and Lucas Layman (11 points) provided pivotal production at key moments throughout a closely-contested struggle.
South built a 31-24 lead heading into halftime when Norris knocked down a 3-pointer near the end of the second quarter. The margin reached double digits in the fourth and Norris' pair of free throws late made it 58-49, giving way for the group's third conference win.
West (3-8, 1-4 QCC) guard Caleb Gilmore dropped in a team-high 15 points in the loss.
On the girls' side, a late comeback from South fell short and resulted in a 40-25 setback, marking the team's second straight defeat.
Kennedy Byrd was honored as the Lady Trojans' (3-6, 1-3 QCC) sole senior.
Both teams are off until next week following a decision Wednesday to suspend this weekend's athletic activities due to the impending winter storm. South is set to host league opponent Fike on Tuesday, Jan. 25.
