The Bud Hawkins Road Exit (Exit 70) closed at 7 p.m. Tuesday as crews prepared to replace a bridge in its Interstate 95 widening project.
The Long Branch Road overpass (Exit 71) reopened to motorists on Friday.
Exit 70 is closed in its entirety and its closure is expected to last about a year.
“When it’s closed, nobody will be able to get on or off I-95 at this exit, or cross over it,” said Andrew Barksdale, public relations officer with the N.C. Department of Transportation. The bridge “must be demolished, and a taller, wider, longer bridge rebuilt. The on and off ramps will have to be redone as well – they will be realigned a bit, extended in some cases (longer acceleration lanes) and elevated to match the higher bridge, which will be more like 16 to 17 feet high.”
