THUMBS DOWN
President Biden for the botched military exit from Afghanistan.
No one wanted American troops there forever, but it looks like we have abandoned many thousands of Afghan nationals who helped us, including translators, drivers and those in other key roles. As National Public Radio reported, they are now “in danger of being killed by the Taliban.” (And that’s in addition to thousands of Americans still trying to get out.)
This tarnishes our national honor.
THUMBS UP
Various Democratic lawmakers who were candid enough to criticize the president’s performance.
For example, Rep. Stephanie Murphy of Florida, who has worked at the Defense Department, told Politico, “I know what a planned drawdown looks like. I know what an orderly departure looks like. I’m disappointed that this is the way in which we are withdrawing.”
And Rep. Vicente Gonzalez of Texas tweeted, “There’s no way to hide it. The situation in Afghanistan is another shame on this admin. Withdrawal was never going to be easy but it didn’t need to come to this.”
THUMBS DOWN
Atlantic magazine owner Laurene Powell Jobs for publishing an article encouraging the Biden administration to put unvaccinated adults on a no-fly list.
As the owner of two private jets, the billionaire widow of Steve Jobs can easily skirt the commercial flight restrictions she would impose on the rest of us.
THUMBS UP
The North Carolina House of Representatives for voting to raise the minimum age for juvenile prosecution from 6 to 8.
If this becomes law, North Carolina will no longer have the youngest juvenile defendants in the country (Connecticut, Maryland and New York still prosecute 7-year-olds). The House bill would also protect most 8- and 9-year-olds from prosecution. The bill now goes back to the Senate, which had already passed a similar version.
THUMBS UP
Representatives from Men of FIC (Faith. Integrity. Character.), Mount Olive First Pentecostal Holiness Church, Rotary of Mount Olive and All the King’s Children for taking school supplies and personal care kits to schools in southern Wayne County and Duplin County.
THUMBS DOWN
Sens. Richard Burr and Thom Tillis for voting for the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill.
When North Carolinians voted to send these Republicans to Washington, this can’t be what they were expecting.
THUMBS DOWN
New York Democratic Congresswomen Ayanna Presley who tweeted that Washington must “cancel rent” despite reporting rental income on a Boston property in her husband’s name. Forgive me for sounding snarky, but is the lawmaker suggesting that rent is only bad if it’s collected by somebody else?
THUMBS DOWN
The American Medical Association for saying sex should be removed as a legal designation on the public part of birth certificates.
Yes, it really is getting that crazy out there.
