Toddler hospitalized after shooting

A toddler was hospitalized after a shooting in Spring Lake Monday evening.

The two-year old was shot in the upper leg while he was in the front seat of his mother’s Nissan Altima parked at 98 Crest Circle around 7:45 p.m., according to the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office. The mother claims the boy shot himself, deputies say.

The mother, Davanika McLean, was talking to another adult standing outside of the car when the shooting occurred, according to HCSO. Deputies say they found a 9mm firearm inside the Altima.

The child was transported to Womack Army Hospital before he was flown to UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill where he underwent surgery for his wound Tuesday morning, according to an HCSO spokesman.

The toddler remains in stable condition after the surgery.

Investigators obtained a search warrant and will be processing evidence within the car, which is now in the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office vehicle evidence bay, deputies said.

No charges have been filed in the case and the investigation is continuing.
