The shooting of a toddler in the upper leg Monday evening has been ruled accidental.

Deputies determined the two-year-old boy accidentally fired the 9 mm handgun his father kept in the vehicle’s unlocked glovebox while sitting in the front seat. The boy’s mother was talking to a family member who was standing at the driver’s side door when the toddler was shot.

The 2016 Nissan Altima was parked near 93 Crest Circle in the Harnett County portion of Spring Lake.

The toddler remains hospitalized at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill in stable condition following surgery Tuesday morning.
