ERWIN — Kaila Cooney, Gracyn Slaughter and Takyra McLean represented Triton on the North Carolina Softball Coaches Association 2021 All-State Softball Team, as announced by the organization this week.
The Lady Hawks standouts were the only players selected from the Tri-County 3A Conference after helping Triton to an unblemished 8-0 mark in league play, earning the program’s first conference title since 2015.
Cooney was named Offensive Player of the Year for both the TCC and All-Record teams, leading the Lady Hawks to yet another state playoffs appearance. The senior third baseman boasted a conference-leading .524 batting average and 13 RBIs during the shortened 12-game regular season. Cooney had three or more hits in four games and caps her storied career with a third all-state honor.
Slaughter was among the state’s top two-way players. On the mound, she finished with a conference-leading 6-1 record, posting a 1.36 ERA and 63 strikeouts. The Lady Hawks senior had a hit in all but three games, finishing with career highs in batting average (.436) and RBIs (15).
McLean was one of only a handful of freshman selections. Manning the lead-off spot, she finished second on the team with a .488 batting average and 20 hits. The first-year outfielder had a hit in every regular-season contest, seven of those being multi-hit efforts. McLean also tied for the team lead with six steals and was among the top scorers, crossing the plate 11 times.
Triton is expected to return all but three players from this season’s 10-3 team.
