UMO student-athletes assist in litter pickup

Posted

A cool fall morning provided the perfect backdrop for the fourth annual townwide litter sweep.

Student-athletes from the University of Mount Olive, 100 in total, assisted in the cleanup. Broken up into teams, they were taken to various locations throughout town and worked their way back to campus.

Once the cleanup was done, the student-athletes dined on pizzas.

Town Manager Jammie Royall said the group gathered approximately 200 bags of trash, which littered the town’s 26 miles of streets. The N.C. Department of Transportation provided gloves and bags.

Barbara Kornegay and Dr. Dennis Draper, who serve on the town’s board of commissioners, spearheaded the community event.
