ERWIN — Mrs. Velma Mae Byrd, 82, died Monday, Jan. 11, 2021 at SECU Hospice House in Smithfield.
Mrs. Velma was born in Wilkes County on July 4, 1938, to the late William Sherman and Laurie Johnson Soots. She was preceded in death by her brothers, A.C. Soots and Billy Soots; and sister, Anna Lou Combs.
Mrs. Byrd graduated from North Wilkesboro High School and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Davidson College. She worked as a registered nurse at Good Hope Hospital most of her career, retiring when Good Hope closed. She loved attending church at Dunn Church of God and going to gospel sings. Mrs. Velma also loved a good game of bingo and going to Cherokee to play the slots. She also enjoyed playing sweepstakes games and going to ballgames. Mrs. Velma loved her family dearly and loved caring for her grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 14 at Skinner & Smith Funeral Home Chapel with Rex Barefoot officiating.
Mrs. Byrd is survived by her son, James Harrold and wife Brandy of Erwin; grandchildren, Megan and Scott Harrold, and Alexis and Bailey Hobson; brother, J.S. Soots of North Wilkesboro; special nephew, Keith Combs and wife Betty of Erwin; great-niece, Ashely Clark and husband Tim of Erwin; great-great nephew, Hunter Clark; and several other nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Velma loved receiving cards and the family requests sympathy cards instead of flowers for her service. If you have a special memory of Velma, please share that with the family.
